Am I Blue? by Joanne Edith

Am I blue?
Loving, gifted grandsons,
Handsome husband,
Fairy tale family,
Perfect puppy!

Ah, there it is... lachrymosa.
My "Shadow", my sheltie.
Always near: my playmate, my pal, my patient.
She trusted me to care for her;
To know when to say "when".

She needed saving...she was saved;
A day, a few precious weeks...months.
She's healing, she's walking, she's eating,
She's happy!
She's gone!

A void is now, happily, filled...our perfect puppy:
Joie de vivre....ecstatic exuberance...we love him!
Still, a dull ache pulses softly beneath a smiling surface
Ever receding: open wound, scab, scar.
I am blue.

  1. You never really forget the joy a beloved pet brings, do you? This piece has a great energy, perfect for puppies.

    1. Yes, mixed emotions abound. So great to see BaDnit...energetic little cavvie, hop up the stairs and chase rabbits..juxtaposed with Shadow's last days when we had to carry her everywhere, up stairs, over thresholds. Thank you for your comment!

    1. Thank you...almost didn't post it because it hits a nerve. I realized that I also dredged up feelings about my parents and their battles with cancer, etc. writing can be so cathartic.

  3. It must have been painful. It comes across in your writing.

    1. Yes...and enjoying and loving the new puppy, Bandit, makes me feel even more melancholy, at times. Thank you for your comment. Greatly appreciated.

  4. Thanks so much for linking up with Trifecta this week. I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a member of the family is always difficult, no matter how many feet they have. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  5. Beautifully put. A new pet brings new joy, but it doesn't ease the pain of losing another beloved pet.

    1. And despite the sadness that we know will ultimately come, we jump right back in. Living life each day though it it not permanent ...the journey vs the destination.
